Kingdom: Episode Two 29th April

Aeste, a beautiful young woman from Eastern Europe, arrives in distress at the Kingdom and Kingdom reception. Her baby has been stolen and she accuses local farmer, and her previous employer, Jack Thriplow (Steve Pemberton), of taking her child. She begs Peter not to go to the police.
Beatrice is causing havoc. She begins putting sticky labels on every object in sight – even Peter’s dog has a label with ‘MILLY’ stuck on her head. In the middle of this madness Peter tries to find out more about the call that came through on Simon’s phone. He learns that it was an international call of unspecified origin.
Peter then makes a visit to Jack Thriplow, who turns out to be the father of Aeste’s child. He is totally uncooperative and accuses Aeste of leaving him no choice but to take his son because she went to live on the streets.
Meanwhile preparations are beginning in Market Shipborough for the 127th Annual Dyke Leaping Championships. At the local pub, the Startled Duck, Ted and Snell are examining a delivery of wooden poles from Holland. They have a problem – the poles are willow and should be ash, but the delivery man has vanished. Peter takes an unsuspecting Lyle to buy a pair of Wellingtons, and then off to do a test run of the poles. Sure enough the pole snaps half way through Lyle’s jump and he ends up soaked to the skin, and covered in pungent pond scum.
Aeste still hasn’t managed to see her child. Out of frustration she smashes up a display of strawberries on a market stall and is arrested. At the police station Peter discovers that she is in the UK illegally, that she is Ukrainian, not Estonian as she had claimed – and that she is about to be deported. Peter decides to stand surety for her, so that she can be freed from jail to see her child.
He takes her to Simon’s empty house. When he arrives he finds a small envelope containing a note: ‘Simon, where’s my money?’ In the following days a dark figure watches the house and at night shouts threats through the letterbox – threats addressed to Simon.
Peter visits Aunt Auriel and he confesses to her that he had a row with Simon the week before he died. Peter also talks to Auriel about Beatrice’s destructive behaviour, and Auriel suggests that he try to make her feel more included.
Gloria gives Beatrice some mind numbing photocopying to do and sure enough, in spite of the smile on her face, Beatrice puts the lot through the shredder.
Peter digs deeper into the Jack Thriplow problem and discovers that he is housing immigrant workers in cramped conditions and charging them an arm and a leg – the reason Aeste herself turned to the streets.
Lyle steps in to save the day and prevent Aeste from being deported by recklessly asking her to marry him; Peter is appalled. The wedding is all ready to go ahead, but Aeste doesn’t show. Peter has found another way to make sure that she can stay in the UK with her son.
New wooden poles for dyke leaping arrives, and when Lyle gives it a quick test he turns out to be a natural. He is chosen as the star jumper for the local team. After overcoming a potential hitch with health and safety inspectors the competition finally goes ahead. Lyle who is upset after being left at the altar, tries his best with his jump, but loses his grip and falls at the last moment.
Peter finally receives information about the shady figure who has been watching Simon’s house – a man called Hill. They meet in the beach car park. Hill was unaware that Simon had died, and tells Peter that he owed money to many people.
After Aeste leaves Peter starts to tidy up Simon’s house. He finds Simon’s photo driving licence. As he looks closer he realises that the photo is Simon, but the name is not – he reads ‘Christopher Waller’. Christopher Waller is an old client of Simon’s – and he has been dead since 2001.
