The Krypton Factor, one of Britain’s most iconic and toughest television shows, returns to ITV1 for the first of two semi-final rounds.

The stakes are higher, the competition is harder and the pressure has never been as intense, as members of the public are invited back to test their mental and physical abilities in a range of rigorous challenges to decide who will go through to The Krypton Factor Final.

Hosted by Ben Shephard, four contestants (red, green, yellow and blue) will undertake a series of rounds on each programme to test mental agility, observation, physical ability, intelligence and general knowledge capabilities.

In episode eight, the first of two semi-final rounds the four contestants are: David Brooks, 37, an investment banker from London; Josie Kelly, 35, a finance controller from Oxfordshire; Ronal Stewart, 26, a self employed maths teacher from London; and Richard Colfer, 27, a puzzle compiler from Bristol.

Mental Agility will be played in the studio (The Kube) and will be individual rounds. The Observation Round will have contestants watch a classic TV clip and answers questions on it. Intelligence will be a race between all four to solve a logic puzzle which utilises state-of-the-art technology. The General Knowledge round will be the final decider on the buzzer. Whilst staying true to the original format of the show, every round has been brought bang up-to-date keeping Krypton Factor as the toughest competition on TV and promises to put even the most astute and logical minds to the test.

Then, there’s the small matter of the Assault Course. To test the contestants’ Physical Ability, the biggest and most memorable of all previous Krypton Factor challenges has been made tougher than ever. To complete the course, contestants will have to give their total commitment as they race around the energy-sapping obstacle course.

Starting with a 40 foot tree climb, every nerve and sinew will be tested to the max. The course is rougher, tougher, more demanding than ever and is designed to test the physical and psychological strength of each contestant as they race around the course against the clock.

Fans of the original series will relish new versions of familiar obstacles such as the Zip Wire, Balance Beam, the Wall and Cargo Net but there are a few surprises awaiting contestants along the way. And of course, there’ll be the obligatory sprint finish forcing contestants to dig deep as they race to the finish line.

The winners of each of the seven heats and the highest scoring runner-up will progress to the semi final, where the contestants battle it out for their place in the final and the chance to walk away with the coveted title of Krypton Factor Champion 2009.
