American singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey has spoken out recently about how leaks of new material made her feel “discouraged” and unmotivated to continue writing more music.
On August 15th a new song True Love On The Side, which had been previously unheard appeared online. This leak followed Black Beauty, Queen Of Disaster, So Legit and Maha Maha which had also been released online ahead of when Lana wanted them to be released.
Lana Del Rey spoke openly to Radio.com about how someone maliciously got a hold of her tracks and how it left her feeling low. Lana said: ‘To be honest, what really happened was, three years ago somebody remotely accessed my hard drive, so even songs I’ve never emailed to myself [were accessed]. There are hundreds of them,”
Lana continued: “I do feel discouraged, yeah. I don’t really know what to put on the record. But I guess I could just put them on and see what happens. Each time I write. I’ll never write a song if I don’t think it’s going to be perfect for the record. I was working on new music until my record got leaked, ’cause my life is like completely invaded. ”
Lana Del Rey also spoke about the negative impact that comes with fame surrounding her career and how touring took away the feeling to write more material.
“I don’t think [fame has] been conducive to writing, being on the road and all that. I don’t really feel inspired to write at all, but beforehand, when I was in Brooklyn for nine years. I was kind of a night owl and just walked around and met weird people. That was me picking up life experiences and meshing them into my own.”
“That really did it for me… I really feel like I need six months to live again, time to be like, normal or abnormal,” she continued. “I don’t have anyone writing anything for me. It’s such an internal well and if it’s not full, it’s just not full.”
Continuing to speak openly to Radio.com Lana spoke about where she got her inspiration from and how before her privacy was invaded and leaks released she spoke about how her ideas came from a dream world.
‘Einstein said, ‘Your imagination is more important than intelligence,’ and I have a very, very big imagination,” she previously revealed. “I love to live in my internal world and will never stop seeking influences and visions for my art.”
This goes to show that while fans all love to hear new material, it does have a negative impact on the artist themselves.
Of course it’s great to hear that new material but for the artist they have it all planned out, how they want it to be released and when – and that’s the way it should be.
This isn’t me preaching to you not to listen to leaks, that’s your choice.
This interview though really does show that how such a talented musician was left feeling low because someone decided to invade her privacy and release material without her permission.
It’s becoming more common as we’ve seen over previous weeks with the likes of Katy Perry and Lady Gaga and it probably won’t stop any time soon, sadly.
