Ah the absolute bliss; the Brits in Benidorm were back last night for a special episode which transcended the giddy heights of humourous excellence and made it to the roof of the high rise apartment block, the Solana… as did half the gang of our beloved holidaymakers who were being held hostage there by a murderer with a gun, but nonetheless, it was a nice day for it and luckily, the inside bar was still open.
If you missed this last night, it should be made law that you watch it on ITV’s catch-up Player – it’s for your own good because to not watch it would leave a huge humour shaped hole in your life, it was just that good.
The show opened as we left it last year, with Mel being hit in the face by a paragliding Johnny Vegas and then hit in the face again by money hungry son-in-law to be Steve Pemberton as Mick. So, Mel was carted off to hospital and Mick to jail – peeing himself on the way – while Janice and Madge tried to get a taxi to go to their men’s respective sides, however, as the only taxi in sight was taken by Kate and Martin, they approached a random stranger and asked if he’d give them a lift.
It turned out the stranger was in fact a murderer and drugs smuggler. I won’t give the plot away in case you haven’t seen it but suffice to say, chaos and cripplingly funny one-liners ensued until the dramatic climax played out on the roof of the Solana where Gavin summoned up all his manliness – which wasn’t much – to give the murderer a jolly good upper-class telling off before fainting.
The good news? Due to the rather inconvenient hostage situation, everyone was offered a free week next year by way of recompense! Oh joy! More Benidorm goodness to look forward to and in fact, it’s back for series three this autumn.
I have to say, this one hour summer special was probably the funniest of the Benidorm series’. There are so many characters who are brilliantly crafted that it’s hard to choose who I love best, but if I had a gun to my head – as Madge and Janice did last night – I’d have to say that swingers Donald and Jacqueline along with gay couple Gavin and Troy are my favourite characters, closely followed by ‘The Oracle’s’ mum Noreen.
They have some excellent lines and one of Jacqueline’s last night came in a scene where she was explaining with incredulity to Madge, Janice and their captor – with whom she assumed Madge and Janice were off for a threesome – that hubby Donald “draws the line at blood relatives” vis-à-vis swinging. This had disappointed her because Donald had a cousin with “a knob like a draught excluder.”
If you’ve never seen any of the series’ of Benidorm, here’s a recap of who the cast are and some of the storylines to date as well as some clips from last night’s special…
This really was a summer treat and bravo to writer Derren Litten – I can’t wait for the new series!
