Later… With Jools Holland Featuring Patti Smith, Joe Cocker and The Cribs

Patti Smith, Joe Cocker and The Cribs are among the guests on tonight’s edition of Later…, hosted by Jools Holland.

The legendary high priestess of punk, Patti Smith, performs tracks from her new album, Twelve, which features covers of rock classics from the likes of Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix and Tears For Fears. Her lengthy career as a pioneering and inspirational rock icon speaks for itself.

Hailing from California, Cold War Kids first rose to attention at the annual SXSW festival in 2006. Their debut album, the warmly received Robbers And Cowards, has been described as a combination of Bob Dylan, Velvet Underground and Tom Waits. They’re also apparently fans of Norwich City FC.

Another legend in the studio this week is Joe Cocker. His new album, Hymn For My Soul, is generally viewed as a return to form, featuring names such as Jim Keltner, Benmont Tench, Merry Clayton, Funk Brother Bob Babbitt and Jim Gilstrap on songs written by Stevie Wonder, John Fogerty and George Harrison.

Mick Hucknall’s Simply Red need no introduction, but, just in case, here’s the basics: the band have been around for 20-odd years, they’ve sold millions of records and just had their 10th Top 10 album with Stay, from which they’ll be performing tracks tonight.

The Cribs are from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, and comprise twins Gary and Ryan Jarman and their younger brother, Ross. They’ve been firm touring buddies with Kaiser Chiefs and their upcoming new album, Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever, was co-produced by Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos.
