It’s not breaking news but it is extremely sad news. Tonight, the music industry is mourning the loss of the great Lou Reed.
The news was revealed earlier this evening by Rolling Stone magazine and immediately the internet went into overdrive with many believing it was all another internet hoax.
Lewis Allan “Lou” Reed was born in 1942 in Brooklyn New York into a Jewish family and from a young age was quoted as saying that his dream was to play guitar.
After playing in many bands Lou Reed found fame as the vocalist, guitarist and main songwriter of the Velvet Underground in the 1960s and went on to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame in 1996.
On leaving the group Lou Reed began his solo career in 1972 and the following year he introduced the world to the hit “Walk on the Wild Side” and subsequently went on to release 20 solo albums.
Lou Reed was continuously collaborating with a number of artists including Metallica and David Bowie but in May 2013 Reed had undergone a liver transplant.
For now though, the cause of his death is yet to be confirmed. Lou Reed is survived by his wife Laurie Anderson.
On the news breaking Twitter was the main focus and millions began tweeting more or less the same message – the world has lost another great.
We’ve chosen a select few tweets to show just how appreciated Lou Reed was by his peers.
