The average person tells three lies every 10 minutes and 81% of us tell white lies every day. But nothing will get past Academy Award nominee Tim Roth as he stars as a human lie detector in the critically-acclaimed ‘Lie To Me’, starting on Thursday 14th May at 10pm only on Sky1 and Sky1 HD.
Lie To Me is created by Samuel Baum (The Evidence) and the executive producers of 24 and Arrested Development. The series is a compelling drama inspired by the scientific discoveries of Dr. Paul Ekman – a real-life specialist and professor of psychology at the University of California, San Francisco, Department of Psychiatry – who can read clues embedded in the human face, body and voice to expose both the truth and lies in criminal investigations.
Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs, The Incredible Hulk, Sky1’s Skellig) stars as Dr. Cal Lightman, the world’s leading deception expert, a scientist who studies facial expressions and involuntary body language to discover not only if you are lying but why. More accurate than any polygraph test, he is a human lie detector.
Lightman heads up a private agency contracted by the FBI, local police, law firms, corporations and private individuals when they’ve hit a roadblock on their searches for the truth. Kelli Williams (The Practice) stars as Dr. Gillian Foster, a gifted psychologist and Lightman’s professional partner. Foster brings balance to the partnership by looking at the bigger picture while Lightman focuses on the details. Brendan Hines (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) and newcomer Monica Raymond (Law and Order SVU) also star as Lightman’s lead researcher Eli Loker and the newest recruit Ria Torres respectively. Loker is so uncomfortable with the human tendency to lie that he practices “radical honesty,” meaning he says everything on his mind at all times. Torres, on the other hand, is one of the few “naturals” in the field of deception detection. She has a raw, untrained ability to read people that makes her a force to be reckoned with. Jennifer Beals (Flashdance) also stars as Lightman’s ex wife Zoe Landau. They me be separated but it soon becomes clear that they still have feelings for each other.
LIE TO ME marks Tim Roth’s first foray into US TV drama. Asked what attracted him to the project he said: “I was ready. It came at a time I think that the story, the character and the people around him were kind of interesting… mostly for me it was these are good stories.”
As well as being based on the work of Dr Ekman, he will also be working as a technical adviser on LIE TO ME. Dr Ekman is contracted with the Secret Service, the Department of Homeland Security and pretty much every government agency to consult in deception-related fields.
Samuel Baum, series creator said: “The remarkable thing about this work is that we all show emotion the same way. There are seven basic emotions and we show them all identically, whether you’re a suburban housewife in the OC or you’re a Saudi sheik in Saudi Arabia. So it’s a universal phenomenon, the science, and that’s why I feel it can really reach a broad audience.”
