Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners is a new six part series launching on Channel 4 this evening.
The average British kitchen has twice as much faecal bacterium as the normal toilet bowl and around half a million British people strip and change their bedclothes no more than once every four months. They are statistics that would scare the formidable Kim and Aggie! However, there is another growing and common group of UK residents, those who view cleaning as their lifelong mission.
This brand new show centres on these people who – by their own admission – are let cleaning take over their lives so much, that they can’t sit still if they see some dust on their mantlepiece or a smudge on their window.
The series is led by Welsh cleaner Linda Dykes, who is so obsessed with all things involving cleanliness that she set up her own agency where she can work her magic in other people’s homes.
Linda, 47, thinks that if you put the nation’s compulsive cleaners to work, they could fix the dirty problems of our country so she joins forces with others in her mindset and works to bring order and hygiene to some of the country’s most stinky homes and horrible public spaces.
On every show Linda and her team will be paired with someone in desperate need of their expertise and tonight, the she and fellow cleaning freak Richard Searle work with antiques dealer Christopher Sylvester. The pensioner’s beautiful old Victorian cottage has been taken over by decades worth of curios, treasures and bric-a-brac and things have gotten to the point where he can barely make it into bed or use his cooker, so bad is the mess.
53-year-old germaphobe Michele Murray also gets involved and she finds herself paired with 30 year old Richard Pugh, a call centre worker who admits he hasn’t lifted a cloth or a hoover in his flat since he took residence in it four years ago.
Also Linda and her Team Clean make their way to Leatherhead to give a makeover to The Pitstop, a drop-in centre for the vulnerable and the homeless.
