MAN HUNTERS: MEET THE GIGOLOS Channel 4
For centuries men have been hiring women for sex. But are women starting to see men in the same way and using them as sexual objects? Increasingly websites are springing up advertising hunky young male escorts, charging up to £150 an hour. But is this really what women want? This authored documentary, from director Guy Gilbert, follows the lives of three gigolos and finds out what makes them so desirable. And the film meets several women who pay for sex as they explain what they’re really looking for.

Am bemused by the attitude of the presenter of the Gogolos programme, Channel 4 tonight. He came across as part prat (and judgemental with it), part niave and part total arshole. Wonder if this was really ‘him’ or was he following a script? No wonder he couldn’t find many women who wanted to talk to him about their use of these men – his attitude probably put them off. There is a huge market for high quality male prostitutes (or gigolos if you insist) when they are truly professional. A professional worthy of the name is clean, attentive (makes the woman feel the centre of attention and desirable)and above all good at sex. It’s all about HER – and not about him, and there the difference lies. They can fake every part of the encounter as well as any good actor can fake any role. Also, they are fussy about their health and have regular checks for STD’s and AIDS. They look after their body and watch their weight, dress well and can ‘kill’ a woman with charm. This is why many perfectly desirable women in their 30’s and 40’s use pros. You ‘pays yer money and you gets yer service’ with guaranteed fufulment and satisfaction. Your average bloke in a pub whose looking for action doesn’t usually fulfil any of these requirements. He is often boozy (if not actually drunk), overweight, smelly (Englishmen and men hanging about in pubs are not very hygenic) and tends to be a selfish, undesirable sex object – who knows little or nothing about actually pleasuring a woman – yet alone make her feel great (in either in the ‘afterglow or self esteem departments).
It was a reflection of the programmes weird attitude when the presenter, right at the end of the programme, started to get a small realization of why ‘John’ was successful. Of COURSE women who go to the trouble of hiring men appreciate (but don’t usually find) something other than venal ‘wham.bham.givvusyrmoneyandfukkityfuk.com’. A bit of genuine human caring would certainly be seen as a bonus and I’m sure John makes quite a few quid extra on the strength of his real or professionally assumed ‘caring’. Rico should loose a few kilos and get over himself and the other guy – well, he was nearer the real thing. His split second take on every bit of ‘worth’ carried on the person to whom he flashes his instant killer smile is exactly what it’s all about. Yes, he was the real Mcoy. But why on earth did the presenter show such contempt and amazement at woman of 70+ looking for sexual (or even unsexual) paid services? These women make up a huge part of the real gigolos clientele. They are frequently gorgeous, sexy, generous, financially ‘comfortable’ – and discriminating! Not for them the ‘free-bees’ found in bars – and they certainly have a more realistic understanding of life and what it’s all about than most of the coarse and rather silly females (all apparantly under 50) who aired their opinions on the show. This programme was a disappointment for many reasons and could have been SO much more than the shallow sneer that it was. The same programme Made In France would be very different. Viva la difference!!
