Earlier in the week we reported that Mariah Carey was set to top one million sales with her Christmas classic ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’.
The track was first released back in 1994 and this year has seen a surge in sales once again this year as Christmas fast approaches. So much so that it has passed the one million sales mark in the UK.
Since downloading began back in 2004 Official Charts sales data shows that Christmas tracks have been digitally downloaded 15 million times.
For Mariah Carey however she managed to pass one million sales in the UK yesterday.
The beauty spoke with OfficialCharts.com on the achievement and said:
“I just landed back in the US after performing a charity show in Africa for the Red Cross and I’m driving home looking at the snow in my hometown of NYC, celebrating selling 1 million copies of ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ in the UK. Thank you, thank you to all of my British fans! Love, Mariah xxxx”
In 2013 alone Christmas music lovers in the UK have downloaded 68,000 copies of the Mariah Carey classic and its return to the charts each year has generated an estimated $50 million in royalties around the world.
‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ peaked at number 2 in 1994 after East 17 and ‘Stay Another Day’ kept her off the top of the Official Singles Chart.
For several years according to the Official Charts Company the track was unavailable for a few years but digital downloads and the song’s feel-good-factor helped its return to the charts in 2007.
Since then it has charted again where it charted at number 4 in 2007, 12 in 2008, 18 in 2009, 22 in 2010, 20 in 2012 and on this years chart (last weekend) it reached number (12).
Mariah Carey now joins 142 other singles to pass the one million sales mark in the UK though she isn’t the only Christmas song to reach the landmark.
Others include ‘White Christmas’ by Bing Crosby, ‘Merry Christmas Everybody’ by Slade and ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’.
Mariah Carey is currently working on a new solo album which is due to be released in spring 2014.
