Though they’re both huge popstars and former Disney Channel darlings, Demi Lovato is making it pretty clear that she’s no longer friends with Miley Cyrus.
The admission came about during an interview with ‘The TJ Show’ this morning, when the ‘Really Don’t Care’ singer was asked what her relationship is like with Cyrus today. Lovato seemed a little hesitant to put a label on their current association, simply replying “um… we’re acquaintances.”
Clarifying her comments, the former ‘X Factor’ judge continued, “Yeah, it’s life, and people change… I don’t have anything in common with her anymore, and I wish her all the best.”
So there we have it. Demi Lovato and Miley Cyrus are just “acquaintances.”
Back in July, the former friends unfollowed each other on social media after appearing to take aim at each other in a number of non-direct tweets. It all appeared to go downhill in December 2013 when Cyrus’ friend Cheyne Thomas appeared to make fun of her struggle with drug abuse. Lovato was quick to fire back on Twitter, tweeting out to Thomas, “You are who your friends are.”
That seemed to support what Lovato told Seventeen magazine in 2012, when she revealed that her and Cyrus used to have “brutal fights” when they were besties. “[Miley] and I are strong headed,” she said in the interview, “when we fight it’s brutal and we’re like, ‘We’re never going to be friends again!,’ then two days later, we’re like, ‘I love you and I miss you!’.”
But it seems like there’s probably no making up this time. The two have undoubtedly been on different paths recently. Lovato has been very public about issues of mental health and drug abuse, whilst Cyrus has notoriously posted photos to her Instagram page of herself smoking marijuana.
