Merlin co-creator Julian Murphy is in ongoing talks about a movie franchise spinoff of the popular BBC fantasy drama.
It was announced today that the show is to end after its fifth series following a two-part special this Christmas.
However, plans for a film trilogy are rapidly gaining pace.
Julian told Digital Spy: “There is definitely ongoing talk and work on a movie, that’s true.”
The writer added that it will be a silver screen extension of the television series but he was unsure if the same cast will be involved.
He said: “Will it to some extent be a reboot? Yes, inevitably – any movie would be. [But] will it be with the same or different actors? It’s miles too early to tell.”
And actor Colin Morgan, who plays Merlin in the programme, claims the show will be going out on a high when it ends in December.
In a video statement (scroll down to watch), he said: “It’s come to its highest point – it’s grown and grown each year. It has become darker, it has become stronger, characters have grown up, the audience has grown up with it.”
And former One Foot in the Grave actor Richard Wilson, who plays Gaius, agreed, telling The Sun: “I’m extremely sad Merlin has come to an end.
“Speaking as Gaius, I feel I have mentored the young wizard as far as I can.
“He is much smarter and greater than me now and I am simply exhausted.”
BBC1 executive Danny Cohen added: “I admire the creators’ decision to end Merlin on a high but also know that we will miss it in the BBC1 schedule.
“We have ambitious plans for new drama in the Saturday evening slot in 2013.”
Merlin series five, part one, is released on DVD on November 26 2012. Series five, part two, and the complete series five is released on DVD and Blu Ray on January 21 2013 by Fremantle Media Enterprises.
