As Benedict Cumberbatch’s fan base continues to grow furiously, it would seem that he has a rather famous addition to his brigade of Cumberb*tches – Meryl Streep!
Cumberbatch, who stars in the title role of the hit BBC detective series, Sherlock, has seen his popularity levels skyrocket since starring in the show, which is based on the epic novels of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle with a modern-day twist.
Outside the BBC show, the British star was cast as John Harrison, the main villain in the latest Star Trek: Into Darkness movie, as well as providing the voice and CGI motion for Smaug the dragon in the new Hobbit film.
And it would seem that his impressive CV has attracted the attention of one of Hollywood’s most respected figures, Meryl Streep, who has revealed to him that she is a big fan of the show.
Discussing the situation with the Daily Express, Cumberbatch explained:
“She’s a Sherlock fan. The first time we met, she came up to me and said, ‘Everyone in our family loves your show. And I just adore it.'”
Cumberbatch went on to explain how he joked with her that he was the best actor in the world after his Star Trek director, JJ Abrams, coined him to be:
“Oh, she knows that. She knows she’s number two. Seriously, though, she’s not only one of the all-time greats, she’s also a human being rather than a film star. That’s the best thing of all.”
Meanwhile, it has also been confirmed that Sherlock is going to San Diego Comic-Con for the first time. The event begins on 18th July and we now know that the Sherlock panel will include show bosses and executive producers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss and producer Sue Vertue.
Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman will NOT be in attendance, as both stars will be filming for other projects but fans have been promised some ‘surprises’ on the day. Sherlock has previously gone to NYC Comic-Con, but not the main event at San Diego. We simply cannot wait!
