The Sun states that his fellow contestants, Gary Cockerill and Phil Turner, said Barrymore is “damaged emotionally”.
They told the paper that Barrymore got drunk and swore at a French waiter, fell off a horse and hit his head, and made unfunny jokes that made people feel “uncomfortable.”
They claim Barrymore was annoyed when few people recognised him, and nobody asked for his autograph.
Turner said, “Michael needs help really. He has gone through so much…
“So much has happened in his life that there has been enough to damage him emotionally.”
Barrymore’s career and personal life hit rock bottom after the body of Stuart Lubbock was found in Michael’s swimming pool after a party ten years ago.
Turner added, “He must have enough money to enjoy life instead of trying to make a comeback.
“He tried to be a constant showman and tried to make jokes but they just weren’t funny. He was trying too hard to fit in with people.
“I can understand he is a gay man who stayed in the closet for most of his life. It was difficult for him.
“But I just hope he gets help. I hope he has people around him who can help.”
Celebrity make-up artist Gary added, “It wasn’t like when he was on TV years ago.
“You almost think, ‘Gosh Michael, maybe you shouldn’t be making a comeback because you are not the same as you were’.
“You really want to like Michael and get along with him and help him.
“But when you meet people on face value and feel you can’t warm to them, there’s a reason for that.”
