Misfits, Sherlock and Emmerdale win at Broadcast Awards 2011

by Lisa McGarry

At last an award ceremony has used its votes wisely!

Held in London last night, the Broadcast Awards highlights included Best Multichannel Programme going to the much deserved Misfits as well as Best New Programme, Best Drama Series or Serial going to Sherlock and Best Soap or Continuing Drama going to Emmerdale.

Finally some sensible decisions. It only occurred to me when reading this that I haven’t heard anyone mention Misfits in any other award ceremony. Obviously, being a mainly E4 programme (incidentally E4 won channel of the year – very deserving too) and not being a comedy it does tend to kind of fall through the cracks of categories along with other great shows.

However, I cannot express my happiness enough at the award of best soap going to the wonderful Emmerdale, which in my opinion is by far the best soap on TV at the moment.

The list of winners are:

Best Popular Factual Programme
– Embarrassing Bodies (Channel 4)

Best Documentary Programme – Cutting Edge – Katie: My Beautiful Face (Channel 4)

Best Daytime Programme – Climbing Great Buildings (BBC Two)

Best Children’s Programme – The Gruffalo (BBC One)

Best Pre-School Programme – Something Special (CBeebies)
