Zooey Deschanel, leading star of New Girl, has spoken out about her character’s relationship with Nick – played by Jake Johnson.
Yeah blah blah, Taylor Swift may well have featured in last night’s episode, but we’re more interested in where Nick and Jess’ relationship may be going. Just like an answer to our prayers, Deschanel has spoken out about the relationship-defining point.
Deschanel, who also serves as a producer for the show said there will be “a lot of comedic possibilities” when it comes to the pair’s relationship, adding that she loves it when people “get invested in the characters”.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, she said: “The thing about Nick and Jess being together is, it opens up a lot of storylines. There are two flawed human beings, and who knows what’s going to happen with them really? I think for sure there are a lot of comedic possibilities in their relationship.
“I love that people get invested in the characters, and especially on a TV show, because they actually see things pan out and see the ebb and flow [of a relationship], rather than like in a movie where the end is the end.”.
Likewise, Deschanel admitted she is “incredibly attached” to the characters on the show.
However, one thing that the actress wasn’t prepared for was her character, Jess and Nick sleeping together in the penultimate episode of the season. She said: “I was surprised that we went so far as to have Nick and Jess sleep together and then have the aftermath [in episode 23], but I really thought it worked. There’s that little dose of reality that is ripe for comedy”.
Speaking about the differences between doing a show like New Girl and a movie, along with the comedy aspect, she said in a movie, you get the script and whether you can do it, or you can’t. However, with a TV show like New Girl, being 49 episodes in you never know where your character may go and what may happen next.
“There’s a certain degree of acting that is a muscle that you flex. Doing this kind of work, it’s like training for a triathlon because you get a lot thrown at you. On a movie, you get a script and you’re, like, ‘Yes, I can do this.’ When you say yes to a TV show, I mean, we’ve done 49 episodes, and there’s inevitably going to be stuff where you’re like ‘I don’t know if I can do this,’ and then you do it and learn you can. It’s kind of a great way to get in shape as an actress, because you get to try a lot of different things.” she explained.
Meanwhile, Lamorne Morris who plays Winston on the hit TV show has said he would like Rihanna to play a love interest for his character.
Following on from Swift’s successful guest spot on the show in last night’s season finale, Morris says he would like Rihanna to cameo, but not as herself.
Speaking to Vulture, he said: “I would like to see him in a relationship. Rihanna’s trying to act now. Let’s bring her on.
“She would [have to] play somebody. I wouldn’t want her to play [the real] Rihanna, because Rihanna is probably a little wild for Winston. She would walk all over Winston”.
As we also reported a few days back, New Girl has been given a “super spot” to air in next February, as it will broadcast right after the Super Bowl.
