With the opening of Sherlock Star, Benedict Cumberbatch’s new film, Star Trek Into Darkness, getting closer, new pictures and a promo trailer have been released, as well as Cumberbatch’s character’s name finally being confirmed!
As we reported last month, the villain that Cumberbatch is set to play has been the subject of much debate and speculation, with some saying the character’s name is ‘John Harrison’, whilst others claim that it could in fact be the notorious Star Trek villain Khan.
But now, it would seem, that an identity has finally been decided as in the latest preview of the film, which is a sequel to JJ Abram’s 2009 Star Trek remake, fans learn a little bit more about John Harrison (Cumberbatch) and his villainous campaign.
The trailer, which also shows cast members Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, John Cho and Simon Pegg alongside Benedict Cumberbatch and fellow new cast member Alice Eve, was unveiled at 7am on Thursday (March 21) – watch it below:
Star Trek Into Darkness will follow an ashamed Kirk (Pine) as he takes his Enterprise crew on a manhunt after Harrison, described as a “one-man weapon of mass destruction”, puts his evil plan to destroy Earth into action.
Speaking at a recent Tokyo press conference to promote the film, Benedict, who has also just signed up to film the third series of BBC mystery drama, Sherlock, a modern twist on the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Novels, Sherlock Holmes, said that his new role is a “complicated character” who is “not to be judged by black-or-white.”
“He is very ruthless,” admitted Cumberbatch. “He is not a clearly good or evil character. He is a villain but the actions he takes have intent and reason.”
And now, with the film closer to release, and the poster for it telling us that Cumberbatch’s character is going to destroy our world, Benedict has opened up with a bit more detail of his character, whose name is still in debate!
Star Trek: Into Darkness is expected to be released in the UK on 17 May 2013, in the meantime take a look at these preview pictures:
