The Sun today reports that former childrens’ entertainers, The Krankies – who are married couple Ian and Janette Tough – were frequent swingers in the ‘70s and ‘80s when they were at the height of their fame.
For those of you too young to remember The Krankies – and bravo on that by the way – Janette played naughty schoolboy Wee Jimmy Krankie, while Ian played Jimmy’s dad. They shot to fame on kids’ show, Crackerjack.
Speaking to the paper about their liberal love-the-one-you’re-with attitude to sex, the couple claimed their rule of thumb was “anywhere, anytime.”
Janette also told the paper, “We went out for Sunday lunch one day and got a bit romantic out at sea.
“We nearly ended up in France. I couldn’t make it last that long now.”
Ian went on to reveal that he and Janette had also “romped” on golf courses across Britain.
He rather sickeningly recalled, “Jersey was good…”
The couple also admitted to having had “flings” with dancers, magicians’ assistants, and a circus leopard tamer.
Ian said, “It was never involved, lovey-dovey stuff with the others. It was just these incredible parties that would get out of hand.
“Janette might ask, ‘Where’s Ian?’ and they’d happily tell her I was in the room next door with a dancer with my trousers around my ankles.”
Janette added, “We always ended up back in our own hotel suite or in the house together at the end of the night.
“There was never anything very serious. But it’s fair to say The Krankies were not as pure as the driven snow.”
And it seems the couple fully embraced a rock ‘n roll lifestyle too, and recalled a time they’d borrowed Status Quo’s tour bus.
Ian said, “Status Quo lent us their coach once. When we gave it back they said, ‘Blinkin’ heck, it’s worse than if we’d lent it to a rock show. And this was for a kids’ show.’
“But we were party people. We were in our 30s when we got fame and went a bit berserk.
“We didn’t get into drugs but we were wild.”
And apparently, one of Ian’s hobbies was streaking.
He said, “I used to run round housing estates with nothing on for a bet.”
The paper adds, “The couple eventually put an end to their wild lifestyle.”
Janette said, “Showbiz is a notorious graveyard for marriages and people are always curious about how we managed to stick together since 1969.
“The truth is we’ve always been together as a married couple. But it didn’t stop us having fun with other people.”
Here’s a look at The Krankies in their heyday with no swinging in sight. Phew.
