Whilst production isn’t due to begin until next year, Broadchurch star Olivia Colman has revealed that she has signed up for the second series!

Broadchurch hit our screens in the spring and took the nation by storm as the story of how the murder of an 11 year old boy in a sleepy seaside town rocked the local community unfolded.

The first series achieved overwhelming ratings for ITV, winning critical acclaim and generating huge publicity around the “whodunit” mystery and there was a huge public outcry for ITV to recommission it for a second run. It was then announced that a follow up series was on the cards by displaying the caption ‘Broadchurch will return’ at the end of the series finale during which it was revealed that the killer was in fact the husband of the Detective Sergeant co-running the case Ellie Miller played by Olivia Colman.

However, the excitement over the new series was rained on slightly when it was announced that filming would not begin until next year, but now Olivia Colman has revealed that she has signed up for the show when it does, leaving the question of whether former Doctor Who star David Tennant, who played Detective Inspector Alec Hardy in Broadchurch, will be signing next!

Discussing if her contract was being renewed for the second series with Digital Spy, Colman commented:

“Yes. I think so. I think everyone knows that. Right? Yes.

“I’ve said yes anyway. They might not write me in it.

“It’s good.”

The actress, who has won BAFTA awards for her roles in Accused and Twenty Twelve, went on to explain how she has found the fame that came with Broadchurch “scary:
“[It’s] quite scary. Different and scary. And not necessarily in a good way.

“Before, I’d get somebody every day going: ‘I like Peep Show’ or something. Now that happens quite a lot more, to the extent I get quite embarrassed.

“Now I only do journeys I have to, because I don’t know what to do.

“I’ve never had a bad experience, it’s just funny that someone knows your face but you don’t know theirs.

“It’s a bit peculiar and I’m sure I’ll get better at it. But if I need a pint of milk, I’ll wait until I really need to go. Where I live, everybody knows me so that’s fine, but away from home it’s slightly daunting — and I’m a bit of a chicken.”

However, despite this Colman’s phone hasn’t exactly been rung off the hook with work offers:

“Everyone said you must now be inundated with work. I think in reality everyone says, ‘She must be really busy, let’s not bother sending her the script’. So things haven’t really changed in terms of the work coming in.

Anne-Marie Duff and Olivia Colman accused

“I’ve got love for female writers but they’re forced not to write well for women because I think a lot of people think it’s not appealing to have a female lead.

“A lot of female writers I know have to have a male lead to get their writing seen. It’s s***.”

Olivia also insisted she has NOT been approached about replacing Matt Smith on play Doctor Who. Bookies were offering 40/1 on her being named as the first female Timelord and a Twitter rumour suggested that she was one of the favourites for the role.

However the actress claimed that she’s heard nothing about it and laughed:

“No one’s asked me about it. I wouldn’t put any money on it.”
