It should come as no surprise when we say One Direction have gone straight to Number (1) on the Official Albums Chart this week with their new album ‘Midnight Memories’.
In doing so, according to the Official Charts Company One Direction have also scored themselves the fastest selling album of 2013 and their fastest selling of their career so far.
In the midweek chart update on Wednesday we reported that the group were already at the top and come Friday it was almost a sure thing that One Direction would top the charts and take the fastest selling album of 2013 title from Daft Punk.
Over the last seven days One Direction have managed to shift more than 237,000 copies of ‘Midnight Memories’ which beats their previous albums.
Looking back we can see 2011’s ‘Up All Night’ (139,000 copies in the first week) and ‘2012’s ‘Take Me Home’ (155,000 copies in the first week).
Back in May Daft Punk managed to shift 165,000 copies of ‘Random Access Memories’ during its first week sale in the UK and they managed to hold onto that title since then.
Martin Talbot, Official Charts Company’s Chief Executive said: “It is a fantastic first week for One Direction, whose album is not just the fastest seller of the year – but is also the first artist title to sell more than 200,000 copies in a week since Michael Buble‘s Christmas album in December, 2011.”
“The success really does send a signal that the festive season is almost with us – and means 1D are now real contenders to claim the biggest album of the year.”
New in at Number (2) on the Official Albums Chart this week is Gary Barlow with his new solo album ‘Since I Saw You Last’ and while he didn’t manage to top the charts like Robbie Williams he did manage to beat him in terms of sales in the first week.
Robbie Williams and ‘Swing Both Ways’ which is this weeks Number (3) managed to shift 109,000 copies in its first week while Gary Barlow has managed 116,000 sales.
Olly Murs returns to the Top 5 this week with the special edition of ‘Right Place, Right Time’ which soared 92 places into Number (4) while ‘The Marshall Mathers LP 2’ by Eminem is at Number (5).
On this weeks Official Albums Chart there are a few new entries including Boyzone who are celebrating their 20th anniversary in music with their new album ‘BZ20’ which is at Number (6).
Susan Boyle also returns to the Official Albums Chart with ‘Home For Christmas’ which is at Number (9) and features songs like ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’ featuring the late Elvis Presley.
Dido and Mary J Blige complete the new entries this week with Dido’s ‘Greatest Hits’ at Number (27) and Mary J Blige’s Christmas collection ‘A Mary Christmas’ at Number (28).
