Alan Yentob accompanies Dame Shirley Bassey from rehearsals to recording studios during the making of her latest album in London and Dublin, in tonight’s episode of Imagine.
Dame Shirley has seen five decades as a recording artist, a triumphant Glastonbury appearance and a major illness. The songs frame and explore the myth of Dame Shirley, the girl from Tiger Bay, and come from artists including Gary Barlow, The Pet Shop Boys, Manic Street Preachers and Rufus Wainwright, along with famous Bond composer John Barry and lyricist Don Black.

Confucius say, “Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it.” No, this isn’t a review of last night’s appearance on the X Factor by Susan Boyle – I’m sorry but the woman gets on my nerves – but it was one of the opening lines of Ugly Beauty on BBC2.
The gist of the programme was the question of whether modern art’s beautiful or not. Why would anyone ask? Well, I don’t know, and frankly, being something of a philistine, I don’t care.
To say this programme was boring would be analogous to saying Herod wasn’t the best babysitter in the world. Within minutes, I’d lost the will to live and by the end, was seriously considering nipping out to the garage to see if we had any hanging rope. Read more & comment »
The Osbourne family as a whole make for fascinating TV; I love them, all of them, so watching them driving up big rocks in jeeps, experiencing zero gravity and dogsledding should’ve been fun, but I was left feeling a tad jealous and somehow, robbed.
To address the former statement, it’s not that I’m any sort of adrenalin junkie – far from it; I’m so sedate I barely move – but I’d love to experience weightlessness. And though it was mildly amusing to watch Ozzy floating around and remarking, “I’ve been high before, but never like this” that was pretty much the high point of the entire programme.
And the latter point I made about feeling ‘robbed’ was that it was time spent watching the show that I’ll never get back. I’m not sure there was a great deal of point to the whole shebang actually and I felt it went on rather too long. Read more & comment »

A year ago a BAFTA and Emmy Award-winning Dispatches told the story of how children in Africa’s Niger Delta were being denounced by Christian pastors as witches and wizards and then killed, tortured or abandoned by their own families. The film forced the Nigerian authorities and the UN to act. Now Dispatches reveals what happened to some of the children and church leaders who originally featured, and discovers that even now children as young as two are still being stigmatised as witches and treated as outcasts.

As ever, Unreported World brought us a story that defied belief in this – supposedly – enlightened age where human rights and equality should be a given.
They are not, and Aidan Hartley, who looks more like he should be presenting University Challenge or something similarly gentle, ventured yet again into a largely ignored corner of the world where thousands are living in the worst kinds of squalor, poverty, and are treated no better than cattle.
And what makes it infinitely worse is that it’s these peoples own government employees who are responsible for using them as currency. In the same way other governments might trade in bullion, in Malaysia, humans are a saleable commodity. Read more & comment »
