The New Year Honours List for 2014 has been released and includes an array of celebrities and regular members of the public who are all being honoured for a variety of things including work for charity.

DJ Pete Tong is among the list of people being honoured and will receive an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to broadcasting and music.

Pete Tong will join the likes of Katherine Jenkins, Ruth Jones, Penelope Keith, Angela Lansbury, The Apprentice’s Karren Brady and many many more.

For the first year ever, there are more women being honoured than men and the full list (if you’re interested) can be seen by clicking here.

Pete Tong, like everyone else on the list has expressed joy at being on the list for an MBE and in a statement the DJ said:

“It’s great to receive this honour for being a DJ. I’m proud that it acknowledges a profession that I care about a great deal, and one that’s made a huge impact around the world.

“I’d like to thank BBC Radio 1 for its unerring commitment to dance and electronic music and for supporting and encouraging me for over two decades.

Tong continued: “I’d like to thank all the club promoters in the UK and around the world for their passion and commitment to putting on amazing events and the artists, producers and DJs that have been making and innovating with the music.”

“This wouldn’t have happened without so many great tunes. Finally, to my family and team who have supported me on this journey in so many ways – thank you.”

Ruth Jones, co-creator of hit BBC comedy ‘Gavin & Stacey’ has also been commenting on being included on the New Year Honours List for 2014 and being the recipient of an MBE and said:

“This isn’t just tidy, it’s proper tidy. I had no idea it was coming. I just came home one night, opened the post and there it was: this letter telling me I was being put forward for it and being really strict about not telling anyone.

“And I’m quite obedient. So I didn’t. Except my husband, who’s really proud. And my dad, who’s beside himself with excitement.”

“Apparently Great Uncle Leslie got an OBE in the ’40s and Uncle Jack the fireman got one in the ’60s. So I’m keeping up with the Joneses, ha ha. Anyway, I’m thrilled.”
