Jeremy Paxman’s Newsnight chair won’t get the chance to get cold if Piers Morgan gets his way!
Jez confirmed that he is stepping down from the BBC Two current affairs show this summer, after fronting it for a long 25 years and it seems that the former editor of The Mirror is interested in becoming a replacement.
Morgan lost his own US job on US TV network CNN earlier this year and though he’s mostly worked with ITV in the UK before – on Britain’s Got Talent and Life Stories – the star is eager to jump ship and defect to the Beeb.
Tweeting Ian Katz, editor of Newsnight, he said:
“I’m available @iankatz1000 – #Newsnight #PaxmanOut”
However football star Gary Lineker isn’t sure it’s a good idea and replied to Morgies saying:
“Would be TV news’ equivalent of Moyes following Fergie!”
TV comic Russell Brand, who has appeared on Newsnight previously, added:
“Paxman come back! This is not the revolution we intended. #Newsnight”
Reaction among viewers has been mixed and tweets have included:

If Piers Morgan replaces Paxman on Newsnight… can we deport him back to the US?

I don't even watch Newsnight. I just don't want good things for Piers.

Turning #Newsnight on to find Piers Morgan instead of Jeremy Paxman is like expecting a fillet steak for tea and looking down at a Big Mac.

Piers Morgan is apparently being touted to replace Jeremy Paxman as Newsnight host. A backward step for British TV if ever I'd seen one…
