Family and friends of former Eastenders star Gemma McCluskie are fearing the worst, after a torso of a young woman was found in a canal near her home.
The brunette beauty went missing on the 1st of March and hundreds of concerned people searched the area close to her Bethnal Green home and mounted an online campaign to try and locate the actress.
However, it seems she may have met a sinister fate, after police arrested Gemma’s brother yesterday, on finding the body on Tuesday night.
Sources have claimed that police are convinced the body found in Regents Canal in Hackney is Gemma’s, because of a distinctive tattoo they found and her former co-star Brooke Kinsella seemed shocked by the news and tweeted last night:
‘Praying that what I’m reading & hearing isn’t true. Until anything is confirmed let’s have faith that she may still be coming home #gemma,’
‘Officers believe they know the identity of the victim but must await further forensic tests before formal identification can take place,’ says a spokesman for Scotland Yard.
‘A 35-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.
‘He remains in custody.’
The man arrested is thought to be Gemma’s brother Tony, who lives with his mum and sister. Police reported yesterday that unclothed body they found, had it’s arms, legs and head hacked off before it was spotted floating in the waterway.
Eastenders stars Natalie Cassidy and Martine McCutcheon had also got involved in the campaign to find Gemma, before this disturbing news came through.
Gemma played Walford’s Kerry Skinner in Eastenders for a number of episodes in 2001. The feisty girl was introduced as a friend of Zoe Slater and the great niece of the late Ethel Skinner. She briefly dated Robbie Jackson but after he proposed to her, it emerged that Kerry had been engaged to another man, Darren, while she was on holiday. Kerry soon left the Square and hasn’t been seen or heard of since.
