primetime picks tv

Praise be! It looks like we might be getting a whole weekend of decent weather across most of the country, so you might not want to be indoors much, but later in the week, when the weather turns grotty again, you’ll want to know what’s worth watching.

Well, that’s what we’re here for! So here are our Primetime Picks of what’s coming up on telly this coming week…

Monday

The Queen’s Coronation: Behind Palace Doors, 8:00pm, Channel 4Queen's coronation

This fascinating documentary uncovers the tensions and conflict between the Queen Mother and Prince Philip during the build up to Princess Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953.

The Queen’s coronation was one of the most important national events of the 20th century, and while on the surface, the royal family painted a picture of family unity, there were in fact divisions within the House of Windsor.

It also features an in-depth interview with Linda Kasabian, a Manson follower who witnessed the murders and testified against the Family during the trial.

Tuesday

The Autistic Me, 9:00pm, BBC3

autismThis documentary follows three people with autism during pivotal moments on the road to being accepted as adults.

23-year-old Oli has high-functioning autism and he’s finding it tough to get a job with a condition that makes it hard to communicate or deal with pressure.

Thomas has autism spectrum disorder and is approaching 16, an age when he demands more independence from his family.

And Alex, 24, is looking for love, but has Asperger syndrome, so communicating and socialising are difficult.

Girl Who Never Ate, 9:00pm, Sky1

girl who never ateThis moving documentary follows the life of Tia McCarthy – who’s never eaten anything – as she embarks on a new course of treatment which could have her eating within weeks.

Born with a rare disorder in which the oesophagus and stomach aren’t connected, Tia underwent radical surgery when she was four months old, but since then she hasn’t accepted food and is fed at night through a tube.

The staff at a clinic in Australia hope to be able to teach Tia how to sustain herself by more natural means.

Thursday

12 Stone Tumour, 8:00pm, Discovery Science

12 stone tumourThis amazing documentary is about a Romanian woman who’s afflicted with a huge 160lb tumour. The Discovery Channel agreed to foot the bill for the £250,000 cost of the operation in exchange for the film rights.

Ms Lucia Bunghez, whose normal body weight without the 12 stone tumour is just under seven stone, suffers from the rare genetic disease Von Recklinghausen’s Disease. The tumour, which first appeared in her back region, covered most of her body before the surgery.

The Suffolk Strangler: Real Crime, 10:35pm, ITV1 suffolk strangler

This is the story of the spate of killings in Suffolk in the run up to Christmas 2006 that caught the attention of the world’s media.

A serial killer went on the rampage, targeting prostitutes in the Ipswich area, leaving one of the country’s smallest police forces to investigate. And as the bodies kept being discovered, the media interest became overwhelming, as did the pressure on the Suffolk Constabulary to catch the murderer.

Friday

The World’s Strangest UFO Stories: The Alien Vampire Chronicles, 8:00pm, Discovery Science

goatsuckerThis oftentimes bizarre show examines some of the most weird and strange stories involving aliens and UFOs.

These include alien-human breeding programmes and unexplained UFO crashes, and off the coastal paradise of Florida, a town seems to have been visited by something they call Chupacabras. Literally translated that means, the Goatsucker. This will be worth watching just to see if the mental image about a Goatsucker is in fact correct…

Bad Boys, 10:00pm, Sky1

If goat sucking aliens aren’t your thing, you might prefer a laugh of a different nature…

Marcus Burnett is a hen-pecked family man. Mike Lowry is a footloose and fancy free ladies’ man. Both are Miami policemen, and both have 72 hours to reclaim a consignment of drugs stolen from under their station’s nose.

To complicate matters, in order to get the assistance of the sole witness to a murder, they have to pretend to be each other. Excellent comedy drama starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Here’s the film’s trailer…

Saturday

Woodstock, 9:00pm, BBC4

This film is an intimate look at the Woodstock Music & Art Festival held in Bethel, NY in 1969. From preparation through cleanup, with historic access to insiders, awesome concert footage, and portraits of the concertgoers, this is a wonderfully nostalgic step back in time.

The negative and positive aspects of the legendary festival are shown, from drug use by performers to naked fans sliding in the mud. From the collapse of the fences by the unexpected hordes to the surreal arrival of National Guard helicopters with food and medical assistance for the impromptu city of 500,000.

Here’s a clip…

Amputee Admirers, 10:00pm, Reallyamputee admirers

This documentary joins a “weekend social get-together” of amputees and their admirers.

It’s organised by Jamma Lee Bennett, who also runs a website which brings amputees and admirers together and apparently, many happy relationships have started at these meetings.

Sunday

Jam and Jerusalem, 8:00pm, BBC1

jam and jerusalemEven if you’ve missed some episodes of this rural comedy, it’s well worth watching just as a one-off. This week, Caroline is planning a dinner party for husband John and his friends from London. She has the brilliant idea of asking Rosie if she’ll help out in the kitchen, but Rosie gets the wrong idea and thinks she’s invited as a guest.

An attempt to put this misunderstanding right via the Vicar only ends up with him making the same mistake.

Starring and written by Jennifer Saunders, you’re guaranteed a good laugh.

The Life of David Gale, 9:00pm, ITV3

Starring Kevin Spacey, this is a really great film, and it has you on the edge of your seat right to the end.

The story follows a University of Austin professor, Dr. David Gale, who is an advocate for the abolishment of capital punishment. However, he’s been falsely convicted of the rape and murder of another activist and he finds himself on death row.

The film is told in flashbacks with a female reporter interviewing Gale. Here’s the film’s trailer…

That’s it for this week. Enjoy your weekend and we’ll see you next week.
