Red or Black? has been AXED due to poor viewing figures!
The game show, which is of course hosted by Geordie duo Ant and Dec – and which airs on Saturday nights in two-parts – boasts the biggest cash prize on TV, and that is in part why ITV bosses decided that it’s simply not earning its keep.
The first series of the show, which aired last year, was backed by a whopping £15million budget, which is the highest sum paid for a TV game show ever, but it still only managed to lure around five million viewers per edition.
The current second series has, so far, attracted around four million viewers on Saturday nights, but in terms of the number of us who usually watch anything that Ant and Dec are fronting – such as I’m A Celebrity and Britain’s Got Talent – that’s less than half of their usual bums on sofas count.
And it seems that Ant and Dec preferred the live shows, whereas ITV insisted on pre-recording them in order to avoid any further scandals of the type that were attached to the show last year.
A show source said, “Ant and Dec have a huge, loyal fanbase but if a format doesn’t interest people then there is only so much they can do.
“They have done two series and it still hasn’t worked. They’re not jumping up and down about it, but it’s highly unlikely they’ll make more.
“Their focus is on I’m A Celebrity and Saturday Night Takeaway.”
The axing of the show is sure to come as a blow for Simon Cowell, who of course normally had the Midas touch in terms of TV…
But I bet his nemesis Simon Fuller’s loving it!
