You hear “Sherlock”, you think of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman and the agonising two year wait between series but there is another one you know!

In fact, before this planet became one giant Cumbercookie, it was left to Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law to entertain us from Baker St in the Guy Ritchie film series of Sherlock Holmes.

Since the first movie in this franchise which was released back in 2009, there has been a second movie, Game of Shadows, and now, according to Downey Jr, we can definitely expect a third.

The actor, who is also under the spotlight with regards to a fourth Iron Man film, revealed during a Reddit AMA yesterday that producers are close to a production date for the new, highly-anticipated new Sherlock Holmes film, explaining to fans:

“Yes, we have a Sherlock 3 in development. We want it to be the best of the series, so that’s a pretty tall order,”

Downey Jr also admitted that he is hoping to add another detective to his list as he is keen to develop a new film based on the 1931 book series of the hugely popular fictional character, Perry Mason!

At least in the role of Mason, Downey Jr will not come under constant comparison to Benedict Cumberbatch, as he does with Sherlock Homes, but according to the actor he is in “awe” of our little BBC detective show, and its star, telling fans:

“Very impressed with Benedict,

“Such smart writing on that show. I have screen envy.”

But it would seem that Sherlock is not the only UK series the star has set his sights on, as Robert Downey Jr also went on to kind of hint that he would be up for a cameo on Doctor Who.

Stranger things have happened, like George Clooney snogging The Dowager Countess on Downton Abbey, so actually we have come to conclusion that we would LOVE to see this happen.

As would Robert Downey Jr, as he told fans:

“A writer asked me to watch a particular episode about a month ago, in hopes of helping us break a story on a project.

“An incredible series. Anything’s possible.”
