Comedian Russell Howard has won the dubious honour of being voted ‘Weird Crush 2013’ by readers of a magazine.
The accolade honours the world’s most unconventionally sexy men, stars who probably wouldn’t want to stand next to Tom Daley in a pair of Speedos but who have that indefinable twinkle in their eye.
‘Weird Crush’ is an honour that even the prettiest of men lust after, One Direction dreamboat Harry Styles has even been quoted as saying he fancies his chances for the title.
Previous winners have included Magician Derren Brown, Ricky Gervais’ sidekick Karl Pilkington, Top Gear presenters Jeremy Clarkson and James May and Pointless co-host Richard Osman.
Russell, 32, third in two previous Weird Crush polls, beat fellow comedian Jon Richardson (new entry) into second place. He commented: “Thanks – I think – to the people who voted for me. Finally, I am king of the mingers! It’s nice to know I’d be many people’s sympathy shag.”
heat’s Lucie Cave added: “heat’s Weird Crush was hotly contested this year – even Harry Styles said it was his dream to win (which is weird in itself). The new entry from Jon Richardson at number two shows girls do really like a man who claims he has no life or friends. But there can only be one winner and although Russell Howard has been hanging around in the Weird crush chart for several years – this year his fans decided it was his turn for the top-spot. Proof that, on Valentine’s Day, there’s love out there for everyone.”
A nationwide poll saw over 3,000 readers of heat magazine cast their votes and after a hard fought contest the top 30 Weird Crushes are be revealed in this week’s issue.
Reigning champion Richard Osman slips into third place behind Russell Howard and Jon Richardson. Reluctantly relinquishing his crown, he commented: “I’ve had the most wonderful year as heat’s Weird Crush, travelling the world and working tirelessly for charity. I am so happy to hand over the crown to Russell Howard, a younger and handsomer man.”
Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch retains his position at number four, while Dr Who star Matt Smith jumps one place to fifth.
A new entry in the last poll, Made In Chelsea posh boy Francis Boulle jumps five spots to sixth place. Man v Food presenter Adam Richman makes his debut at seven. Pointless host Alexander Armstrong takes eighth place followed by Harry Potter actor Alan Rickman at nine and topping off the top ten is another new entry – none other than carrot-topped crooner Ed Sheeran.
Daybreak favourite Aled Jones has edged in to the list with a new entry at number 30, one place ahead of national treasure Lord Sebastian Coe at 29. He was beaten by everyone’s favourite Mayor Boris Johnson who ranked at 27.
Having been voted number 17 in 2010, music mogul Simon Cowell makes a welcome return to the top thirty this year at number 21 and Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville proves his popularity by shooting straight into the list at 23.
This year’s no-shows include out of favour politicians David Cameron and Nick Clegg and TOWIE club owner Mick Norcross.
