The race for Christmas Number 1 is underway and this week is extremely important for all contenders who wish to top the charts.
This morning the Official Charts Company have released information in regards to sales data at this early stage in the week as we approach Sunday where the Christmas Number 1 will be revealed.
Sam Bailey won this years X Factor on Sunday night and already her debut single – a cover of Demi Lovato’s ‘Skyscraper’ is currently leading the race to the 2013 Official Christmas Number 1.
However, she’s not safe yet. We’re only on Tuesday and the Official Charts Company are standing by the fact that things are still incredibly close going into Sunday.
‘Skyscraper’ as of this morning is currently outselling ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams which is Number (2) at this stage by more than two copies to one.
Until midnight of last night (16th December) Sam Bailey had managed to sell almost 45,000 copies via downloads in the UK alone and a physical copy of the single is expected to be available later today or tomorrow.
Martin Talbot, the Official Charts Company chief executive has commented on the race so far and says:
“Sam Bailey is out of the blocks and into a strong lead in the race to become this year’s Official Christmas Number 1.”
“But as we’ve seen time and time again, this is certainly not the week of the year to become complacent,”
He adds: “With a host of acts snapping at Sam’s heels, including Pharrell, Leona, and the growing AC/DC campaign, anything could still happen between now and Sunday’s final whistle.”
