Sam Smith’s debut album ‘In The Lonely Hour’ has given the British singer-songwriter more success than he probably could ever imagine.

His success however hasn’t just been limited to his home country, the star has also won great respect and recognition in the United States and his recent sales figures confirm the impact.

The Official Charts Company have confirmed this morning that Sam Smith has become the only artist in 2014 to sell one million albums in both the UK and the US.

‘In The Lonely Hour’ officially passed the one million sales mark in the UK over the past 24 hours – following confirmation from Nielsen Music in the US that the album had achieved the same across the pond.

By midnight last night, the Official Charts Company could confirm that the album had sold 1.007 million copies based on their data making it the second album to do so in the UK this year.

This follows Ed Sheeran’s million-selling release ‘X’ which achieved that feat back in November however because Sam has also achieved this in the US. He earns that title.

In the United States, according to Nielsen Music, only Taylor Swift and the Frozen soundtrack have passed the million sales mark this year.

Success for both Ed and Sam also makes 2014 the first year where more than one album passed the 1 million sales mark in the UK since 2011.

Back then Adele’s ’21’ and ’19’, Michael Buble’s ‘Christmas’ and Bruno Mars’ ‘Doo-Wops & Hooligans’ all achieved one million sales in the UK.

Sam spoke to and said: “OFFICIALLY sold 1 MILLION copies of In The Lonely Hour! To say I am ecstatic is a huge understatement. Thank you so much to every single person who has purchased my album.”

Official Charts’ Chief Executive Martin Talbot, added: “Many festive congratulations to Sam. To hit a million anywhere is impressive, but to become the only artist in the world to do so on both sides of the Atlantic is quite remarkable.”

“His journey in 2014, from unknown newcomer winning the Brit Awards’ Critics Choice award to internationally renowned double million-seller, has been incredible.”

‘In The Lonely Hour’ was released earlier this year and since then has been regularly featured on the Official Albums Chart updates – only spending one week outside the Top 5 since its release.

The album also featured a number of hit singles including ‘Money On My Mind’, ‘Stay With Me’, ‘I’m Not The Only One’ and many more! Huge congratulations go to Sam on a massive 2014!
