SANDRA OH JOINS DAVID MORRISSEY IN THORNE: SCAREDY CAT
Sky1 HD have announced the start of production on the second Mark Billingham adaptation of thorne: scaredy cat and the casting of Golden Globe® winner Sandra Oh (Grey’s Anatomy) as DS Sarah Chen. The first adaptation, thorne: sleepyhead, wrapped production in April and it will precede thorne: scaredy cat to form a six-part series on Sky1 HD in Autumn 2010. This will be followed by a worldwide theatrical release from ContentFilm.
thorne: scaredy cat was commissioned by Huw Kennair-Jones, Commissioning Editor, Drama, Sky1 HD and Sky1. The drama will be directed by Emmy® nominee Benjamin Ross (Poppy Shakespeare, RK0 281) from scripts adapted by Jim Keeble and Dudi Appleton (Trial & Retribution, Silent Witness). Sandra Oh joins returning cast members David Morrissey (State Of Play, Red Riding), Eddie Marsan (Sherlock Holmes, Happy Go Lucky), Aidan Gillen (Queer As Folk, The Wire) and O. T. Fagbenle (Material Girl, Doctor Who). Further additions to the cast include Joe Absolom (Doc Martin, Eastenders), Tom Brooke (The Boat That Rocked) and Leo Gregory (Green Street).
Kennair-Jones commented: “We’re thrilled to have an actress of Sandra Oh’s calibre join David Morrissey, Aidan Gillen, Eddie Marsan and the rest of the amazing cast for the thorne adaptations as they bring Mark Billingham’s iconic characters to life on Sky1 HD. thorne: scaredy cat promises to be a gripping, multi faceted drama that’ll compliment thorne; sleepyhead perfectly, promising to make the thorne series an unmissable addition to Sky1 HD’s ambitious drama line up.”
thorne: scaredy cat will be Sky1 HD’s second adaptation of Mark Billingham’s DI Tom Thorne novels. The film follows the Metropolitan Police as they investigate a string of murders in London. The killer selected his victim at St Pancras station, followed her home on the tube, and brutally killed her while her child hid nearby. At the same time, a second woman is discovered in Camley Street Park, just behind St Pancras station. It is a grisly coincidence that eerily echoes the murder of two other women, stabbed to death months before on the same day.
Although taking place at similar times and locations, the manner of the killings is strikingly different and Thorne discovers that this is not a single serial killer he’s up against, but two of them. One is ruthless and in control, while his partner in crime is submissive, compliant and terrified.
Jolyon Symonds, Producer, thorne said: “Production on thorne: sleepyhead was a resounding success and we are now thrilled to start the journey of bringing thorne: scaredy cat from page to screen. Having Ben Ross on board as director will give this part of the thorne series a whole new feel, and Sandra Oh is a very welcome addition to an already stellar cast.”
