The season three premiere of Scandal is still quite a few months away, unfortunately, but, that hasn’t stopped Shonda Rhimes from spilling the beans on what may be coming up in the third season.

Kerry Washington who plays Olivia Pope on Scandal is featured in the August edition of Vanity Fair, but unfortunately, she didn’t offer much information on season 3.

Washington told the glossy magazine: “One of the most profound things for me about the show is the number of white women of all ages who come up to me and say, ‘I want to be Olivia Pope’. It’s especially profound in a place like South Africa. It’s called ‘The Fixer’ over there, and it just started its second season. The fact that white women can see this woman of color as an aspirational character is revolutionary, I think, in the medium of television.”

Since she didn’t offer up that much information, Vanity Fair thought it was only right to catch up with the creator of Scandal to see if she would spill the beans on the forthcoming season.

Rhimes admitted it was “time to unfold a little bit more about Olivia’s character”. She confirmed that the team are currently in the writers’ room and planning our Olivia’s backstory. She added she has some specific ideas but we’ll all have to wait and see how it’s going to unfold.

“I think it’s time to unfold a little bit more about Olivia’s character. We’re in the writers’ room right now, and we’re still planning all that out. I have some very specific ideas, but we’ll see how much we unfold.” Rhimes explained.

Last season ended with the revelation that Joe Morton’s character is Olivia’s father… Rhimes said that she and Morton were the only ones to know before the season finale filmed. She said she told him that “he couldn’t tell another living, breathing soul”.

Rhimes admitted: “I told him that he couldn’t tell another living, breathing soul. I knew that he needed the underpinnings of what that meant for his character. And so I told him, but we didn’t tell anybody else. Including Kerry.”

Scandal returns later this year for its third season.
