Scrubs: JD and Dr Cox’s Relationship

scrubs

Just watched an episode of Scrubs where Dr Cox is withdrawn after three transplant patients die.

He rolls into work drunk one day, and gets sent on a leave of absence. He starts drinking and stops talking to everyone.

The gang rally round him at home, except JD, who pretends to take a moral stance about his being drunk at the hospital and stays away.

However, he has a change of heart at the end, and goes to Cox. He opens up to Cox and manages to get him out of his depression. The episode closes with Cox in the bar with everyone else. In typical Cox fashion, he walks over to JD and gives him a simple pat on the back.

That’s what I love about Scrubs, and what I’ll really miss when the series closes down for good. JD looks on Cox as a 50/50 mix of father figure/superhero. I’m not sure whether Cox shares the paternal bond, but while he frequently shows JD tough love, there are occassional glimmers of geniune feeling.

I think because Cox is so emotionally damaged, those moments when he connects with JD are really touching. Maybe I’m just a big sap, but I had a lump in my throat at the end of that episode of Scrubs.

What about you guys? Have you got any favourite moments from Scrubs?
