The long weekend has of course been leading up to the big finale of the star studded Diamond Jubilee Concert, which airs tonight on BBC1 at 7.30pm.
And last night, in BBC documentary Gary Barlow: On Her Majesty’s Service, we saw the details of Gary’s journey to collect musical contributions from all around the commonwealth for the track ‘Sing’, which will of course be played as the centerpiece of tonight’s show.
And ahead of the concert, which will be attended by “senior royals” and of course, a huge audience, both live at the Palace and outside it, where the show will be aired on giant screens, the iconic Queen Victoria Memorial has undergone transformation, with a 360-degree wrap-around stage erected on the famous landmark.
There are lots of special surprises in store, including having eighties band Madness performing their 1982 hit ‘Our House’ on top of Buckingham Palace.
Also performing will be Robbie Williams, Dame Shirley Bassey and of course, Sir Cliff Richard who’ll sing a medley of hits…
Gary Barlow will also perform, along with Cheryl Cole, Sir Elton John and pop princess Kylie Minogue.
Also headlining are Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder while each segment will be introduced by various celebrities, including Lenny Henry, Miranda Hart, Rob Brydon and Lee Mack.
Danny Cohen, who is of course the Controller of BBC1, said of the concert, “This will be a very special concert. Expect some last-minute surprises.”
And Gary Barlow added, “The balcony where Will and Kate kissed will be part of the concert.
“In fact, all the balconies will be used. We have amazing projections that are going on the front once it gets dark.
“At the end, the royals will be on stage to finish things off, though they won’t be singing.”
When the concert ends at 10pm, around 4,000 beacons will be lit not only across Britain but around the world.
The Queen will light the last one – the National Beacon – which will signal the start of a spectacular fireworks display at Buckingham Palace.
