Shameless is back! Not sure about talking baby Stella though…

by Lynn Connolly

The brilliant Shameless was back on TV last night and it was excellent, except for the talking baby Stella. When she first ‘spoke’ to Frank, I could accept that it was just yet another of his drug induced episodes, but when we learned that Monica could hear her as well… it just seemed ludicrous.

One of the attractions of Shameless for me was always the fact that the characters really could be living out there on the Chatsworth. It reflected real life in many ways but having Monica hearing baby Stella talking too ruined that. If they’d left it at Frank being able to hear her, it would’ve been fine.

Basically, Stella set her parents a challenge – find even one good person on the Chatsworth and Stella would live. Fail, and baby Stella wasn’t going to hang around. She was going to just fade away and die, hoping to be allocated to a better life in her next incarnation. In the end, she found the good person she hoped for in the form of her dad Frank when he talked PC Tom out of killing himself.

Other than that difficult to swallow storyline though, it was great to see everyone back. Debbie turned sixteen and dumped PC Tom who then threatened to blow his brains out, which as I just mentioned, Frank talked him out of in inimitable Frank style.

Stan and Yvonne are still going strong – even though he’s struggling to get used to Muslim traditions – and poor Ian got knocked down by a car and lost his memory.

He forgot he was gay, forgot he lived among the Gallagher clan and forgot how see-wrap his life was, so he determined to head off and find a better life. I’m sure he won’t be gone long though!

Poor old Shane found out that his prostitute girlfriend Kelly wasn’t pregnant with his child and in fact was having a ‘phantom’ pregnancy which she explained was what ghosts had. Mimi – matriarch of the Macguire family – was uncharacteristically kind to Kelly when she wept about the lack of baby.

And the ever fabulous Lillian was back running the brothel from her home and always on the look out for a bargain. A really funny moment was when Lillian was telling Norma how awful it must be to have amnesia… then she repeated what she’d said about two minutes later. Maybe you had to be there but it was a piquant Lillian moment.

Here’s the trailer for the show…

I still miss Veronica and Kev and Lip wasn’t in last night’s show but I’m hoping we might see him later on in the series. I miss Sheila too but nonetheless, this is still one of the best shows on telly!
