Shameless star Sally Carman on Kelly Maguire’s spiral into self-destruction

by Lynn Connolly

As fans of Shameless will know, in last week’s series nine debut, delighted tart with a heart Kelly Maguire announced that she was pregnant…

However, after a fierce row with a former client’s wife, Kelly miscarried, and was left devastated by her loss.

And in today’s Daily Star, Sally Carman, who of course plays Kelly, has revealed that there’s yet more heartache to come for the normally fun loving hooker.

She said, “Hellfire, it’s all kicking off. Suddenly Kelly’s out to self-destruct.

“She really wanted to keep the baby to give her a new start and so she goes into a deep depression and spirals out of control.”

Sally, who’s also starred in Doctors, Heartbeat and Holby City, went on to reveal that Kelly copes with her loss by turning to drink and drugs.

She said, “Kelly puts on her face, hikes up her skirt, steps into her heels and grabs the world by the knackers.

“She gets off her face and starts going out partying. It gets hedonistic in a major way. She wakes up a couple of times with men she doesn’t know…

“Then she gets her drink spiked with ketamine and it all kicks off. She’s in freefall and nearly dies.

“It’s brilliant because I get to do the whole American Beauty sequence, where she lies naked with rose petals falling on her.

“But because it’s Shameless, instead of rose petals we have Quavers and tab ends.

”Quaver salt off me but it was great fun. I got to fall through ceilings and I got to see myself in a dream sequence.

“You don’t get that on Coronation Street, do you? That’s why Shameless is so brilliant.

“There’s the comedy storylines of Kelly in the wacky outfits in the brothel but in reality that wouldn’t actually be funny at all.

“No woman would do that if she had a choice.”

And on the subject of the garish and often very skimpy outfits she has to wear as Kelly, Sally said, “Everyone always says: ‘What the hell is she wearing?’ But for me the more outrageous the better. It’s all good fun.

“The outfit that always stands out, because it was horrific for everyone involved, is an all-in-one lace body stocking. Everything was hanging out, just encased in a bit of lace. It was awful.

“I didn’t really have to look at it because I was wearing it but the crew on set were trying not to make eye contact with me.

“To preserve my modesty they put a bit of bondage tape over my nips. But all that did was flatten down what little I have there any- way. So to be honest it did not look good.”

Series nine continues next week, but in the meantime, here are a couple of clips from last week’s episode…
