Sherlock: Benedict Cumberbatch cast as villain in Star Wars Episode 7?
Following their successful collaboration on the recent Star Trek: Into Darkness movie, it seems that director JJ Abrams has another project in mind for Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch – a role in the next Star Wars movie!
No one could question the decision to cast Cumberbatch, who has also just finished filming the film based on Wikileaks creator Julian Assange The Fifth Estate, as super villain John Harrison in the latest Star Trek film.
And, in everything he does, he proved once and for all that the part was pretty much invented for him as his superb acting skills and dramatic ambiance sky rocketed him into yet another book of fame.
So, with that in mind, it comes as no surprise that Abrams, who directed both recent Star Trek movies, wants to keep hold of the inspiring actor for his next big deal, Star Wars VII.
The media circuit has been buzzing with rumours regarding the casting process for this much-anticipated film, the first part of a sequel trilogy, and according to Film Chronicle and announcement is imminent, and so is Cumberbatch’s attachment to it!
According to the site Cumberbatch, who is about to burst back on to our BBC screens with the third series of Sherlock either at the end of this year or beginning of next, has already been cast in an unspecified role having already expressed an interest in being part of the film.
It is thought that Cumberbatch will keep his villainous head on for the story, which will follow the children of the original trilogy’s main cast, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo picking up 30 years after the last Star Wars Episode 6: Return Of The Jedi.
Given Cumberbatch’s age and that which the original characters will be when the story picks up again, it is unlikely that he will be part of the original character line up. It has been widely speculated that Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher will return to reprise their roles from the original film.
Another British actor who is quite keen to be part of the project is current, yet departing, Doctor Who Matt Smith who revealed his desire to work with JJ Abrams at the recent San Diego Comic Con.
When asked if he would like to star in the next Star Trek movie, Smith replied:
“Yeah, I would [work with] JJ. Or Star Wars. So, just putting it out there.”
However, the actor, who has recently been filming for Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut How to Catch a Monster, went on to explain how Benedict Cumberbatch has probably ruined his chances:
“Ben’s kind of done the English villain now, hasn’t he? And he was great in it,
“I love Star Trek and I love JJ Abrams. What that man can do with a steadycam is amazing,”
