With the filming of the much-anticipated third series of BBC hit detective series, Sherlock, about to begin, the shows main star, Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the title role of Sherlock, has confirmed that both he, and his co-star Martin Freeman, who plays his on-screen sidekick Dr Watson, have signed up for a fourth series too!
This news will be well received amongst die-hard Sherlock fans after we were kept guessing until the eleventh hour as to whether Cumberbatch, who has also just been filming for the new Star Trek movie, and Freeman, who has been filming The Hobbit, would even return for the new series due to hit our screens later this year.
However, speaking at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards, during which he picked up the television drama prize for Parade’s End, Cumberbatch confirmed the news, adding how he, and the rest of the cast and crew would love for the show to continue for “as long as possible”.
Discussing his future with the show to Radiotimes.com, he revealed:
“We’ve agreed to two more series but I could get into trouble for saying that,
“All I know at the moment is I’m doing these three [episodes of the upcoming series] and another three.”
With regards to the busy schedules that he and the other shows stars have found they have as a result of the success of Sherlock, Cumberbatch went on to say how the shows runner, Steven Moffat’s availability was also a factor to consider when planning further series beyond this one and the next:
“We love doing it as we are doing it at the moment in the format we are doing it,” he said.
“I’d love to keep it going for as long as possible, I think we all would.”
“It just depends on Martin and I’s availability, how long we can keep it going. It depends on Steven’s ability. I’d love to keep it going.”
Still, we still have two more series’ to look forward to, and it seems we aren’t the only ones excited at the prospect of series 3!
Cumberbatch and Freeman looked like kids at a fairground in pictures they posted on social networking site, Twitter, when they turned up at the studio for their first script run for series three.
The picture shows Cumberbatch pulling a face whilst standing next to Freeman who had grapes in front of his eyes, and was posted along with the following captions:
“#Sherlock read-through over, plenty of surprises in store for series three!”
To which fans responded to excitedly, with followers tweeting:
“Im honestly counting down the days in which series 3 starts. Team Freeman. xx” and
” I want the mystery behind how Sherlock survived that fatal jump……..”
The obscure picture even started an online trend with fans re-writing quotes from the show with the word grape inserted, all under the hashtag # SherlockQuotesWithGrape.
With regards to the new series, which is just about to begin filming, Freeman revealed on Graham Norton’s Comic Relief Big Chat last week that he wasn’t even sure of how the script will see Sherlock explain his hoaxed suicide shown at the end of series two, adding that:
“Mark Gatiss is a clever fella.”
Meanwhile Cumberbatch said of the new series of the modern-day adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s crime novels, that it would be a “treat” for fans, adding: “You are in for an absolute stonker. It’s going to be a treat.
“It’s a terrific episode.”
