It’s that time we have all been waiting for… the premiere date of Sherlock’s third series has been officially revealed by the BBC today as part of a Publicity stunt in London.
The sodding American’s got their broadcast date before us so we were left in the dark but we now know that Sherlock will return to the UK on January 1, 2014!
As part of a PR stunt in London this morning, the BBC announced the return date by the use of a black hearse with the phrase “Sherlock 01. 01. 14” featured in flowers in the back of the vehicle.
The hearse made its away around London to a few key filming locations of the new series of Sherlock including Baker Street, North Gower Street and St. Bart’s Hospital.
The hashtag #SherlockLives also features on one of the windows of the car. Of course, the hearse is synonymous with the season 2 finale in which Sherlock plummeted to his death. His friends and family believe that he’s dead – but we know differently.
In the short, but sweet trailer that was recently unveiled, we see Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock visiting his own headstone.
The trailer cleverly plays on the use of Twitter and how influential the social networking website can be when events like this happen. For a moment during season 2, we all thought that Sherlock had killed himself until it was reveled he was still in tact and the Twittersphere went crazy.
At the end of the trailer, the screen is slowly filled with hashtags including #SherlockLives, #SherlockIsBack and #SherlockIsNotDead.
Martin Freeman returns as Watson in the upcoming series and he’s rocking a serious tache! In one of the scenes, he’s looking quite taken aback whilst in another snap, we see Sherlock stood on the top of a roof.
The new series will go into detail of how Sherlock managed to survive the fall and where he has been. We will also get to see Watson and Mary Morstan tie the knot. Steven Moffat, writer of the drama has said that “it’s time to reveal the truth”.
Meanwhile, an official synopsis has been unveiled on the BBC website recently, which reads:
“BBC One’s much praised, multi-award-winning drama Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, returns for an eagerly awaited third series of three, 90-minute films – The Empty Hearse, The Sign Of Three and His Last Vow.
“The contemporary re-imagining of the Arthur Conan Doyle classic, co-created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, has caused a sensation since it first aired in the summer of 2010, the last series delivering an audience of more than 10 million viewers who have tuned in to watch Sherlock and John Watson navigate a maze of cryptic clues and lethal killers in three thrilling, action-packed adventures.
“In episode one of this new series, two years after the devastating effects of The Reichenbach Fall, Dr John Watson has got on with his life. New horizons, romance and a comforting domestic future beckon. But, with London under threat of a huge terrorist attack, Sherlock Holmes is about to rise from the grave with all the theatricality that comes so naturally to him. It’s what his best friend wanted more than anything, but for John Watson it might well be a case of ‘be careful what you wish for’! If Sherlock thinks everything will be just as he left it though, he’s in for a very big surprise…”
Sherlock returns to BBC One on New Year’s Day. At the moment, a broadcast time has not yet been given, but at least we now have the date…
