With the third, and final instalment of the current seris of Sherlock only days away from our BBC screens, new pictures have been released from the episode.
His Last Vow, which was introduced during Saturday night’s wedding episode, will feature for the first time in full our hero’s new arch nemesis, Charles Augustus Magnussen.
Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) is renowned for fighting off the bad guys, with series one and two focussed on his constant war with Moriarty, who he managed to completely foil in the end by faking his own death during the series 2 finale, The Reichenbach Fall,
Now with Moriarty well and truly out of the way, a new villain is about to step up to the mark.
Charles Augusts Magnussen, from Sherlock’s very own words, is the a “supreme blackmailer” who can turn his stomach more than any other, so we are expecting a truly magnificent battle of wits as the two super genius’ finally go to head to head during Sunday night’s episode, His Last Vow, written by Steven Moffat!
And from pictures released today we are all in for one hell of a treat!
In the two first images we can see Sherlock and his trusty sidekick John Watson (Martin Freeman) together, as well as one of them posing with a menacing looking Magnussen, played by Lars Mikkelsen.
In the third picture we can see Magnussen again, this time with new character Lady Smallwood, played by Lindsay Duncan.
The third series of Sherlock has been a huge hit amongst fans, despite having to wait the best part of two years for it to reach our screens following on from series two, attracting a whopping 9.2 million viewers for its New Year’s Day series premier, The Empty hearse, with Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One, commenting:
“I’m very proud to have Sherlock on BBC One and see it topping the charts as the biggest-ever consolidated audience ever, it demonstrates that ambition and quality matter to our audience.”
Meanwhile, Sue Vertue, producer of Sherlock for Hartswood Films, added: “When we began Sherlock, and it was an instant hit, we thought it couldn’t get better. But each series has outdone the last and this is our biggest rating yet. Trying to believe this is really happening is a job in itself!”
Finally, Lars Mikkelsen is quoted by the Sun newspaper as saying this about his new character:
“It’s the best script I’ve ever read. I’d say Magnussen is more or less infatuated with Sherlock. They share the fact they are both intelligent, they also share another certain thing – I won’t spoil what though.”
On the subject of his two new co-stars, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, he added:
“The chemistry between those two, and the writing, is what really makes the show.”
