Since the end of the third series of Sherlock became imminent, fans across the globe began to fret about just how long we would have to wait for the next series.
Considering that each series of Sherlock is only three episodes long, broadcasting one a week for less than a month of the year, even the standard yearly wait seemed like eternity.
So when it was announced that series 2, which by the way had us gripped by the biggest riddle of the century at the end of the series finale, would not be returning for two years, the entire planet deflated a little bit.
And didn’t those two years seem like forever?
So when we finally did get our eyeballs on the third instalment of the amazing BBC detective series, people began asking the question ‘how long till series 4’ pretty much before the end credits had finished rolling.
However, as we reported last week, producers had told those attending the BAFTA screening of the series 3 finale, His Last Vow, that they hoped to begin production on series 4 as soon as possible, claiming the busy schedules of Martin Freeman who plays Watson and Benedict Cumberbatch who plays Sherlock were the reason for the last delay, and that we might even see a return this time as early as Christmas.
This made us very excited (well not as excited as if they had said they had already filmed series four and it would be on next week) but it seems that maybe we have all jumped the gun a bit as it turns out this development is news to Martin Freeman!
Asked excitedly by Access Hollywood if reports that the show would be back quicker than anticipated by Access Hollywood, Freeman replied:
“That’s news to me. People have told me that today. If journalists are saying it, it must be true. I don’t know.
“I’ve not read any new scripts. So all I know is we all like the show, we all want to keep doing it for as long as we want to do it and as long as we enjoy it.”
The actor also went on to explain how much he had enjoyed working with his off-screen partner, Amanda Abbington in the last series.
Freeman and Abbington, who plays John Watson’s wife Mary Morstan in the hit show, have been together for over a decade, having met on the set of the film Men Only back in 2010, and have since gone on to have two children together.
For some couples, working and living together might be a tad stressful, but according to Martin Freeman it made his day complete, as he explained to the publication:
“I’ve done it a few times with Amanda before, but nothing as sustained as this,
“She’s great. I love it. It made the day go even quicker. It made it even more enjoyable.
“We have a natural kind of rhythm and chemistry together that I love. I really appreciate that part of my day. It made it easier.”
