Sir David Jason – who is starring this Christmas in new BBC comedy, The Royal Bodyguard – has said that he believes Germany is trying to run Europe as a “Fourth Reich.”
He also said that he feels Britain is becoming a “satellite” country which is at the mercy of Brussels.
According to the Sun, Sir David made his remarks during an interview with a magazine.
He said, “The irony is that here we are, the world has changed, and the Germans want to run Europe.
“They failed to do it by war, twice. What is it? Is this the Fourth Reich?”
And though his remarks are of course controversial, Sir David went on to say that he believes his opinions reflect what Britons are thinking in light of a recent poll that put the Conservatives 6% ahead of Labour regarding the Tories’ stance on the Eurozone treaty.
Sir David added, “We have more and more rules coming out of Europe telling us what to do, and I think people are getting a bit fed up with it…
“This was supposed to be a common market.
“I don’t remember them ever saying we would be governed by Brussels and become a satellite of Europe. But there you are.”
Sir David went on to explain that he was a “Blitz baby” and grew up in an area of London that suffered tremendous damage during the war.
And after his remarks about Germany, he concluded, “At least we’re not throwing bombs at each other.”
I can’t help but feel there was an unspoken “yet” at the end of that sentence!
You can see Sir David – whose real name and title is Sir David John White OBE – in The Royal Bodyguard on Boxing Day, BBC1 at 9:30pm.
