Sky has announced details of THE GREAT TREE HOUSE CHALLENGE, a search for the ultimate environmentally responsible community space, designed, built and valued by the communities themselves.
THE GREAT TREE HOUSE CHALLENGE (2×60) will be broadcast on Sky 1 HD in November, following a nationwide call-out to schools and local communities to put forward their sustainable tree house designs in a bid to be awarded a £20,000 grant.
Whether you are an aspiring architect, a keen environmentalist or just up for the challenge, Sky wants to hear from communities prepared to build the ultimate Tree House for the enjoyment and benefit of local people. The proposed use, design and construction of each tree house are the responsibility of each individual community, as is the need for the project to be both ‘green minded’ and environmentally responsible.
Heading up the search is Charlie Luxton (DIY SOS, I Own Britain’s Best Home), an architectural designer who is passionate about the environment, sustainable architecture and eco-friendly design.
Ten of the submitted designs will be selected to appear on a dedicated website while the four leading designs will feature as part of the two part documentary series on Sky 1 in November.
Two of these designs will be fully realised and awarded a grant of £20,000 towards the cost of construction. Only one of these will be crowned the overall winner – as decided by a panel of expert, independent Judges. The documentary series will capture the highs and lows of the building experience and the overall judging process.
Charlie Luxton comments: “If you are a community organisation with a vision for a potential tree house, a plot of land and bags of drive we want to hear from you. You can be as creative as you like but we are looking for a tree house that will serve a genuine need in your community and that can be built sustainably”
Mark Aldridge, Executive Producer, Sky added: “We are keen to hear from anyone with an inspiring and achievable idea for an eco-friendly community space. These Tree Houses have the potential to provide a lasting and bespoke asset for their community”
THE GREAT TREE HOUSE CHALLENGE is one of a number of environment related programmes that Sky has commissioned as part of its on-going commitment to raise awareness of, and protect, the environment. Sky has also partnered with WWF on Sky Rainforest Rescue – a three-year project to help save a billion trees in the state of Acre, northwest Brazil. A donation of just £20 will help save 1,000 trees and Sky will match every donation up to the joint target of £4 million. For more information visit: www.sky.com/rainforestrescue
Jo Fox, Sky’s Director of the Bigger Picture, said “We all know how important protecting the environment is and through our programming we want to inspire others to join with us to make a difference. We hope this competition really encourages people to think about the impact of their everyday lives.”
