Sky One Commissions The Real A&E

Sky1 has commissioned THE REAL A&E, a 10 x 60’ medical documentary series which will follow the tireless work of emergency consultants, doctors and nurses as they provide 24/7 life-saving treatment to their patients.

Filmed in Coventry’s state of the art University Hospital and the trauma centre at Middlesbrough’s James Cook University Hospital, the series will give exclusive access to all of those involved, including health care professionals and the patients themselves. Each programme also follows emergency doctors and paramedics flying with the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance based at Coventry and the Great North Ambulance that covers thousands of square miles of the North of England from its base at Durham Tees Valley Airport.

THE REAL A&E will document the lives of those involved in the crews, discovering what motivates them, as well as what happens to the patients, what treatment they receive and what their recovery involves, plus how their families cope. Stories will include one of the country’s leading female jockeys who was airlifted to hospital after being seriously injured in a fall at Catterick Racecourse; a postman who needed plastic surgery after being attacked by a dog; a woman whose ear was ripped off when she fell over her slippers and a man who screwed himself to the roof of his garden shed.

THE REAL A&E is a fast-paced look at the graphic reality of life and death in an emergency department. Although at times shocking and harrowing, it is extremely moving to discover what goes on each day behind the scenes of those whose actions can mean the difference between life and death for those unfortunate enough to need their care.

Executive producer for Mandrill Television is Chris Wise and Series Producer is Fiona Greig. The series was commissioned by Donna Taberer, Commissioning Editor, Entertainment for Sky1 and Siobhan Mulholland, Commissioning Editor for Sky Real Lives.

THE REAL A&E begins in early May 2009 on Sky1 and Sky1 HD, and can be seen again on Sky Real Lives in July 2009.
