Sky One Picks Up Lie To Me

Sky1 has secured the exclusive UK TV rights to the hotly anticipated US drama Lie To Me which marks Academy Award nominee Tim Roth’s first foray into television. The deal with 20th Century Fox Television Distribution will give Sky1 exclusive free and basic TV rights. Sky1 have also acquired the non-exclusive rights for VOD and download-to-own, and the series will also be broadcast in High-Definition.

David Smyth, Head of Acquisitions, Sky1, Sky2 and Sky3, commented: “Lie To Me is an exemplary procedural drama and we know it will resonate with Sky’s customers. The series is generating tremendous buzz in the US and, in a huge show of confidence, has been awarded the much coveted post-American Idol slot. We’re thrilled to continue our partnership with Fox and to strengthen our exceptional slate of US programming.”

Lie To Me is created by Samuel Baum (The Evidence) and the executive producers of 24 and Arrested Development. The series is a compelling new drama inspired by the scientific discoveries of Dr. Paul Ekman – a real-life specialist and professor of psychology at the University of California, San Francisco, Department of Psychiatry – who can read clues embedded in the human face, body and voice to expose both the truth and lies in criminal investigations.

Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs, The Incredible Hulk and Sky1’s upcoming drama Skellig) stars as Dr. Cal Lightman, the world’s leading deception expert, a scientist who studies facial expressions and involuntary body language to discover not only if you are lying but why. More accurate than any polygraph test, he is a human lie detector.

Lightman heads up a private agency contracted by the FBI, local police, law firms, corporations and private individuals when they’ve hit a roadblock on their searches for the truth. Kelli Williams (The Practice) stars as Dr. Gillian Foster, a gifted psychologist and Lightman’s professional partner. Foster brings balance to the partnership by looking at the bigger picture while Lightman focuses on the details. Brendan Hines (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) and newcomer Monica Raymond (Law and Order SVU) also star as Lightman’s lead researcher Eli Loker and the newest recruit Ria Torres respectively. Loker is so uncomfortable with the human tendency to lie that he practices “radical honesty,” meaning he says everything on his mind at all times. Torres, on the other hand, is one of the few “naturals” in the field of deception detection. She has a raw, untrained ability to read people that makes her a force to be reckoned with.

Lie To Me probes the very heart of human nature and explores the idea that there’s nothing more revealing than when we choose to tell the truth and when we decide to lie.

Lie To Me is produced by Imagine Television in association with 20th Century Fox Television. Samuel Baum, Brian Grazer, David Nevins and Steven Maeda serve as executive producers on the series. The pilot was directed by Robert Schwentke.

Lie To Me will launch on Sky1 and Sky1 HD in Spring 2009.
