Smash season two spoilers: American Idol’s Jennifer Hudson to join the cast as Veronica Moore!

American Idol is ruling the TV world….or so it seems.

We recently revealed that recent runner up Jessica Sanchez will most likely be joining the cast of Glee when it returns for it’s fourth season in October of this year and this afternoon, we can report that Jennifer Hudson has also landed herself a part on NBC’s ‘Smash.’

The hit musical drama is of course already fronted by former Idol runner up Katharine McPhee, who plays the role of leading lady Karen in the Broadway inspired series.

At the end of the first run, Karen had just played Marilyn Monroe in the opening night of a musical based on the film legend’s life. It has been reported that when the series returns for it’s second season, former Dreamgirls actress Hudson will play a Tony Award-winning Broadway star named Veronica Moore who wields huge influence and has a significant impact on the lives and careers of Karen (McPhee) and her sometimes friend, often nemesis Ivy (Megan Hilty).

“We’re thrilled to have Jennifer Hudson coming to ‘Smash’,” NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt revealed last week, adding:

“This series is a showcase for some of the best musical talent in the business, and that’s a fitting description for Jennifer Hudson. Her character will represent someone who reached their Broadway dream but also paid a price for it.”

Executive producer Steven Spielberg added:

“First ‘Dreamgirls’, now ‘Smash’. I have no doubt Jennifer will continue to deliver even more inspiration to the audience responsible for giving us a second season on NBC. It’s wonderful to be reunited with her at DreamWorks Television and NBC.”

Three other new regular characters will also be added to season two, including Courtney, an African-American ensemble member, Danny (Jeremy Jordan), a working class man, and Joe, a gay man from Brooklyn.

Not returning to the cast will be wannabe producer Ellis (Jaime Cepero), Karen’s old flame and former fiance Dev (Raza Jaffrey), and Julia’s husband Frank (Brian d’Arcy James).
