It doesn’t matter whether you love social media and what it’s become, or absolutely loathe social media and what it’s become; it’s part of daily life now, and that’s not changing anytime soon.
This week, Twitter, one of the biggest social media networks, have unveiled their list of the most-tweeted artists of the year, and Justin Bieber is in first place.
Social media has grown exponentially over the past few years, thanks in the main part – arguably – to the instant and real-time connection between users and the rest of the world, and that of course includes interaction with celebs, musicians and bands.
And given that young people make frequent use of social media, it’s not surprising to see who made it into the Top 10 most-tweeted artists of the year…
For Justin Bieber – who has 57.6 million Twitter followers – 2014 has been a crazy year, and probably for all the wrong reasons. So, for us it’s clear as to why he’s topped this list. It’s because for good or bad, everyone’s been talking about him.
Closely behind him on the annual Twitter list are One Direction boys Niall Horan, Harry Styles, and Liam Payne in 2nd, 3rd and 4th place respectively with their band mate Louis Tomlinson coming in at number nine.
American singer Ariana Grande comes in at fifth place on the Twitter list, closely followed by Demi Lovato in sixth, Lady Gaga in seventh place, Beyoncé in eighth place and ‘Blank Space’ beauty Taylor Swift taking tenth place.
Twitter have also confirmed, in addition to who has been the most-tweeted, which musicians have gained the most followers over the past few years, and Katy Perry retains her title as the Queen of Twitter after topping the list.
Over the past twelve months on Twitter, Katy Perry (@katyperry) has gained an incredible 13 million new followers while Justin Bieber (@JustinBieber) has gained 11 million and Taylor Swift (@TaylorSwift13) has gained 10 million.
Ariana Grande (@ArianaGrande) has gained 9.5 million new followers over the past year while Justin Timberlake (@JTimberlake) has gained 9.1 million new followers and Selena Gomez (@SelenaGomez) has gained 7.9 million followers.
As for the final four, Demi Lovato (@DDLovato) and Rihanna (@Rihanna) have gained 6.2 million followers, Britney Spears (@BritneySpears) has gained 6.1 million followers and One Direction (@OneDirection), as a collective have gained 5.5 million new followers.
Are you surprised by who has topped both lists? Do you think One Direction would have been higher on both, or was that about what you expected?
