Joey failed because it did not expand on Joey’s character or show us anything new about him. Not because he was part of a “set.” So was Frasier. He wasn’t a stand alone character at all. But we learned more about Frasier than we knew on Cheers. We met the family that shaped him. Learned he was a native Seattleite, a devoted Dad to Frederick, and so on.

With Joey, they should have introduced more of his quirky Italian family. Where were his parents, uncles, aunts, grandma? His little sisters? Next, I would have added dimension to Joey by making him a little less dumb and shallow. Nobody is that dumb.

To be honest what did we know about Joey except he was a hot chick magnet and a fairly decent actor? I loved when he went on auditions when he was on friends. Those were funny! They needed more of that! I would have made him more struggling of an actor, which is why he had to move in with sis.

I also would have made that nephew of his younger, and more Joey than Joey, a foil who tries to steal his women even though he’s all of 15. Maybe this kid is struggling with the recent loss of his Dad and acting out, and this could show Joey in a responsible, Dad like role.

I would have made the sister straight and maybe a little snooty, so Joey and his nutty family could be her foil. Maybe she’s trying hard to make it in corporate America and climb the social ladder in LA. Maybe she’s in the TV business too. Joey’s a constant embarrassment!

Next, bring in the cast of characters! Coming from an ensemble cast, Joey needs a new cast to play off of. A hot, ditzy neighbor and hot daughter, a boxer, old hermit lady with a zillion cats, divorced guy on the prowl, gay Hispanic drag queen who looks like Chandler with same snarky sarcasm, precocious black kid and his single, jazz musician dad, rich landlord’s snooty, uptight son who has a crush on Joey’s sister, and of course Joey’s crazy agent.

They also should have at least had Joey talking to some of the friends on the show. A visit from Chandler would have been cool, and I think that Chandler would be the one friend he would call pretty frequently.
Even if we didn’t see Chandler, maybe each show ending, Joey would talk on the phone with him and let him know how things were going.

Wow, the possibilities were endless. I just don’t know why they screwed up a show that could have been good with just a little effort. I’m so sorry Joey failed. I looked forward to it and thought it would be done justice.

That 70's Show - That 80's Show

It wasn't a true spinoff with none of the same characters but just a really bad knock off.

The X-Files - The Lone Gunmen

spinoff flop that should have been given a chance however it got canceled by virtue of the death of the characters in the original show, since they ran side by side for a bit.

"Successful spin-offs:
Happy Days – Laverne & Shirley and Joanie Loves Chachi"

Eh? "Laverne & Shirley," yes, but "Joanie Loves Chachi" was a decided flop.

"Spin-offs that bombed!

The Golden Girls – Empty Nest, Nurses and Golden Palace"

"The Golden Palace" is the only one of the three that was a real flop; "Nurses" ran for three years, and "Empty Nest" went on for seven. Some bomb...
