SPORT’S DIRTY SECRETS
With a mix of original interviews and archive footage, Sport’s Dirty Secrets uncovers 18 of the most audacious scandals to hit sport over the last 100 years, ultimately asking how it all went wrong. This second episode includes a look at the recent death of Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer.
The underhand tactics and shady dealings continue as the ethics of the Spanish Paralympic Committee are held up to scrutiny. The story broke as Spain basked in the glory of their greatest ever performance in the Paralympic Games in Sydney 2000: one team member sensationally claimed that all was far from above board on the basketball team. The programme also reports on the controversial nutrition centre in California that pioneered a steroid known as The Clear: an undetectable anabolic steroid, created solely to dupe drug testers.
One of the centre’s most high-profile clients was Kelli White, once America’s fastest female, who maintains that “it only comes down to the best scientist”. The programme concludes with a trip to Pakistan, where Woolmer’s recent death looms large over the world of cricket. Unanswered questions abound, although there is no shortage of theories. Perhaps the ultimate question is whether sport has become such a big business that someone can be murdered over a game of cricket. And has the search for sport’s dirtiest secret found its darkest moment?
