Steve Coogan blasts Piers Morgan at press standards inquiry

Comedian Steve Coogan, who is arguably best known for his alter ego Alan Partridge, yesterday blasted former newspaper editor Piers Morgan for how he handled an article written about Coogan.

Speaking at the Leveson Inquiry into press standards yesterday, Coogan referenced a time when Morgan interviewed him for GQ magazine…

Coogan stated that the article “dredged up” stories about his supposed drug use, his alleged liaisons with lapdancers, and it also addressed the claim that Steve had fathered a child with Kurt Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love.

When asked by the Daily Star if Piers had got Steve to open up by being “charming or something else”, Coogan replied, “Something else.”

He went on to say that the interview had been “intrusive” before adding, “It’s Piers Morgan, so it’s what you expect.”

He added, “I certainly wasn’t doing an exposé and spilling my guts. I was talking about things that had already been aired…”

While giving evidence at the inquiry, Coogan also accused the former News of the World editor Andy Coulson of organizing a “sting” operation against him, and also accused the Daily Mail of running “revenge” articles after he criticised its editor on BBC2’s Newsnight soon after the phone hacking scandal broke.

And of course, actor Hugh Grant also appeared yesterday to discuss how phone hacking had affected him.
